1982-83 Soundboard Recordings
Van Halen
1982-1983 · Various
Recorded 1982-1983 The original run of Van Halen lasted from 1974 to 1985. During that time, the band released 6 unbelievable albums, influenced every guitar player and most lead singers (even Prince took the jumping splits from DLR), helped solidify the genre of heavy metal and almost singlehandedly invented the 1980s. Until now, there has been no live album of this era. I included every song performed on the tour, mixed together from a litany of shows. They played 82 in 1982, as Dave celebrates, plus an additional 12 for the 1983 South American leg of the tour. It makes up about 1/3 of the songs on this album because they performed at such a high level and had to stay sober. Special thanks to Music Media Archives/ByTorX1, who has put up roughly 60 concerts from the Hide Your Sheep Tour. An even more special thanks to Van Halen engineer Roy Snyder. He had the foresight to record so much audio and the world is eternally grateful. Due to age and recording conditions, certain audio errors or artifacts are included on this release. Everything here was remastered in CD quality and neatly fills 2 discs. Also, Diamond Dave loved shouting out the city they were currently in. I could not edit around this. That explains SOME of the hilarious stuff he says. Disc 1: Romeo Delight (24 Sept & 1 Nov) Dave always forgot the words. I guess they went up his nose. Edited from multiple performances for maximum energy. This song was the opener for this tour, as well as the two preceding. Unchained (12 Oct) Eddie really did win guitar player of the year 5 years in a row. And more after that too. Drum Solo (12 Oct) The sped up drums were a part of the bands stage show, not an artifact. The Full Bug (12 Oct) A great harmonica solo from DLR. No acoustic intro, this was only played on this tour. Runnin' With The Devil (12 Oct) This was a hard one to narrow down for the release. Little Dreamer (15 & 16 Jan) Only played on the last leg of the tour, it hadn't been played since 1978. There is a pretty obvious edit before the solo. I tried to make all the edits pretty seamless, but I had no choice. I had to include Eddie's solo, it's my favorite of this whole thing. Mean Street (21 Jan) The last two minutes of this just kick fucking ass. This also has the ending from Hot For Teacher which was presumably written during the break in touring. This was also brought back just for the last leg of the tour. Dave Rap (11 Dec) Dave did these before Jamie's Cryin' every night. Most were not recorded, so I went with the U.S. tour closer. Large sections of silence or off-mic hot-dogging and grandstanding have been edited for pacing. Jamie's Cryin' (11 Dec) Diamond Dave did a lot more dancing in this song. Little Guitars (12 Oct) This whole album has a lot of editing, and I'm not gonna lie, it's almost exclusively because of DLR. However, Little Guitars gave Eddie the most trouble throughout the tour. It didn't help that he's playing a tiny Gibson (shown on the cover on this release) Where Have All The Good Times Gone! (7 Sept) The first cover song and the first Kinks cover. This was played after the bass solo on the last leg of the tour. Bass Solo (7 Sept) Shoutout to Michael Anthony. Listening to all the shows, he messed up the least. And it wasn't that close. Granted, the others were dancing and jumping around, but I've never had to edit around his performance. Hang 'Em High (7 Sept) For some reason the tape of this show has a lot of strange effects on DLRs voice. It adds to the intensity. Also to be noted is Alex drumming like his life depends on it. This song was cut from the last leg of the tour. God Bless The Child/New York, New York (12 Feb) One night only did DLR add New York, New York to the often sung Billie Holiday snippet. Eddie adds impromptu guitar with the same settings as the next song. Cathedral (19 Nov) This was played separately from the guitar solo because there was a decent chance Eddie would blow up his guitar and gear playing it this way. It is also the cause of the extended intro on the next song. Secrets (2 Dec) Extended intro with a lot of great playing from Eddie. Dance The Night Away (15 Jan) This is another one that was hard to narrow down. Somebody Get Me A Doctor (30 Nov) Contains part of the Skip James song I'm So Glad. Sections of this sound like Girl Gone Bad which they recorded around the same time. This was the big improv song on the tour, usually going around 10 minutes. Everybody Wants Some!! (10 Aug & 11 Dec) Eddie joins in on drums for the intro. This was another one rarely captured in its entirety, due to the long and explicit Dave Rap in the middle. It was also rarely played note for note. Disc 2: Porto Alegre (1 Feb) The first of five songs not on another album. Dave always did a little something before playing Ice Cream Man. During the South American portion of the tour, it was more of a full band jam/ode to the locals. Ice Cream Man (7 Sept) John Brim Cover. Another one of my favorite solos on this album. Intruder (31 July) DLR plays synth. (Oh) Pretty Woman (31 July) A hard one to narrow down as well. Guitar Solo (11 Dec) Fun fact: Eddie was helping test out the Floyd Rose locking tremolo during this tour. He really put it through the ringer. Contains parts of Eruption, Spanish Fly, Little Guitars (Intro), Mean Street and a really early version of the Hot For Teacher intro. D.O.A. (7 Sept) This was played for the first time in 3 years due to the aforementioned Floyd Rose. Alex does a lot of heavy metal drumming on this too. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love (7 Sept) Usually this song or the next closed the set, I added both. Bottoms Up! (27 Jan & 3 Aug) They legitimately could not play this song front to back without issues due to all the on stage shenanigans. You know the show is over when you hear a gong. Encore 1: Keep Playin' That Rock 'N' Roll (24 July) Edgar Winter cover. They would play this once in a blue moon during the DLR years. Dancing In The Street (5 Feb) Rarely played live. Eddie does the synth parts on his guitar. Beer Drinkers And Hell Raisers (15 Jan) ZZ Top cover. Michael Anthony on call and response vocals. Brought back for the first time since 1976. So This Is Love? (12 & 5 Feb) An extended intro and a killer solo. Only played during the last couple shows of this tour. Summertime Blues (5 Feb) Eddie Cochran cover. Another rare cover and the best "new" song of this set with a great jam at the end that's based off of the middle section of Symptom Of The Universe by Black Sabbath. Encore 2: You Really Got Me (3 Aug) The Kinks Cover. This was always split up into two parts. The intro is the riff Growth from the end of their album Women And Children First. Heartbreak Hotel (5 Feb) Elvis Presley Cover. This didn't fit anywhere else so it's here. Happy Trails (12 Oct) Roy Rogers Cover. Gotta send the folks home happy. If you didn't notice, 11 of the 12 songs from Diver Down are played. The holdout, Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now), obviously can't be done live but was occasionally played over the PA as post show music. You Really Got Me (3 Aug & More) It all comes full circle. Van Halen was: Michael Anthony: Bass, Vocals David Lee Roth - Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica, Synthesizer Alex Van Halen - Drums, Backing Vocals Edward Van Halen - Guitar, Backing Vocals, Drums
